The Passo di Gavia is one of the most magnificent climbs in the Italian Alps. This film features the northern ascent starting from Bormio. After heading up to the resort town of Santa Caterina, the ascent becomes more sustained, culminating in grades approaching 13% before relenting for the last few kilometres to the spectacular summit. The full ride is a challenge any Tacx enthusiast should relish, but this film is also perfectly suited for a multi-session ride due to a few key respites along its ascent. The southern ascent of the Passo di Gavia is part of the DVD T1956.32 Climbs Collection I. This DVD also features the climb of the Passo dello Stelvio from Bormio. In 1988, the 2,621m high Passo di Gavia gave birth to the most epic Giro d’Italia stage ever when Johan van der Velde conquered its snowy flanks in shorts and short-sleeved. The Dutch rider reached the top first but then collapsed and disappeared into a van.
