The Passo del Mortirolo, one of the highest paved roads in Europe, is seen by many professional cyclists as the most difficult and most demanding climb of all. The mountain was first climbed during the 1990 Giro d’Italia and has been feared ever since. After a short and easy warm up, there is no escape from the real climb. There isn’t a single moment to catch your breath. The view is magnificent, but chances are you won’t have time to enjoy it. You will have to go deep top reach the top of this steep and merciless climb (1852m). The late Marco Pantani won the stage on the Mortirolo in the 1994 Giro. After he died, a monument was erected on the mountain to in memory of the legendary Italian climber. The first Giro rider to reach to top of the Mortirolo is awarded with a special prize, the Cima Pantani.
