The Grossglockner is one of the most famous mountain passes in the world. The road across the pass was constructed in the thirties, especially to grant the Austrians better access to the wonderful mountainous landscapes and glaciers. The 35 km ride starts in the village of Bruck at about 800m and takes you up the popular northern side of the climb past the Fuscher Törl (2428m) to a short distance past the tunnel at Hochtor (2504m). The Grossglockner is often climbed in the Tour of Austria. The rider who arrives first at the Fuscher Törl on the Hochalpenstrasse is crowned the ‘Glocknerkönig’. Famous cyclists like Charly Gaul, Ivan Basso, Jakob Fuglsang and Mathias Frank once were ‘king’.
